Lakers’ Kobe Bryant staying positive amid struggling season

first_imgBryant shattered the common narrative on why he has remained willing to do that.“We all love what we do,” Bryant said. “It’s not the fame. It’s not the money. It’s not even the championships. It’s loving what we do. We love what we do all the time. We study all the time. As a result, championships will come.” Bryant has won five NBA championships, but he has not won the ultimate prize since 2010. Manning entered Sundy’s Super Bowl having won just one in three appearances. But Bryant downplayed how that narrative should measure greatness.“Failure is really nonexistent,” Bryant said. “What is failure? When you go to the end of the season and lose a Super Bowl? Is that failing? To most people, maybe. But when you’re picking apart why you lost, is that failing? I don’t think so.” That partly explains why Bryant lit into his teammates following a loss in Portland nearly two weeks ago. The losing bothered Bryant, obviously. But he sensed that his teammates became desensitized to the endless losses. “With us not being as competitive as we used to be, it’s changed my role substantially,” Bryant said. “It’s to be more of a teacher, more of a coach, more of a person and player that understands more and has more patience for the young guys.”Paying homageBryant may not face never-ending blitzes. He may not feel the force of a bulky lineman tackling him. But Bryant can relate to Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning, so much so that Bryant appeared in an NFL-sanctioned Manning tribute video before Super Bowl 50 between the Broncos and Carolina Panthers. “There comes a time where the physical and mental are perfectly in sync and are in tune and things that go beyond being normal for the sports for years,” said Bryant, who is listed as questionable for Monday’s game because of soreness in his right shoulder. “That’s where guys like Peyton and myself don’t succumb to that temptation because we continue to push and continue to learn. You don’t become complacent.” INDIANAPOLIS >> The smile has mostly stayed planted on Kobe Bryant’s face, even when experiencing shooting slumps and witnessing youthful mistakes. His laugh has become warm and infectious when he shares funny stories of an accomplished 20-year NBA career. The losses pile up, but Bryant still sounds giddy about playing, as if it marks the first time he has picked up a basketball. What happened to the man that seethed seemingly during every loss and frequently growled when teammates made mistakes? Has Bryant cooled down during his final NBA season, considering that the Lakers (11-42) enter Monday’s game against the Indiana Pacers (27-24) at Bankers Life Fieldhouse far from championship contention?“It’d be the same. Exactly the same,” Bryant said. “It’s just that at the end of the game, I think the outcomes would be a little different, but the way I approach them would be exactly the same. I think it’s magnified a lot more, but even when I was younger I always used to say, ‘A Great White still swims with a smile.’ The killer instinct never goes away.”center_img Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Errorlast_img read more

The UNSC also conducts investigations into areas of conflict and may send in UN peacekeeping forces to help reduce tension.South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) said the country’s UNSC seat would give it the opportunity to forge closer partnerships with other member states. The department added that South Africa is committed to contributing to the work of the UNSC in maintaining international peace and security, particularly in Africa.“South Africa wants to advance the African agenda within the security council,” said the country’s UN ambassador Baso Sangqu.“More than two-thirds of the conflicts and crises that the security council handles are in Africa. It is not something that we should be proud of,” he said.Learning from experienceSouth Africa previously served on the UNSC in 2007 and 2008. “South Africa has learnt important lessons from the first term,” said Sangqu, who will lead the country’s UNSC delegation.Dirco said it has assembled a “crack team” of diplomats and officials to help South Africa serve on the council.“In its actions, South Africa will be guided by the commitment to uphold international law and universal values, and help others protect or achieve their inherent and inalienable rights,” said International Relations and Cooperation Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane.She added that the country would continue with its efforts to promote and enhance the UNSC’s cooperation with regional organisations, particularly the African Union’s Peace and Security Council.Sangqu said: “Ivory Coast will be an issue we will have to deal with. There is now a standoff with regards to who the leader is. As a council member, South Africa will have to lead from the front on such issues.”South Africa will also advocate for more resources to help resolve the conflict in Somalia, the ambassador added. He said the UNSC should not to let the situation in that country become “a forgotten conflict” like the dispute between Morocco and Western Sahara guerrillas.last_img read more

Facebook on Google Buzz: How Well Does That Friendship Model Work?

first_imgjolie odell The Dos and Don’ts of Brand Awareness Videos A Comprehensive Guide to a Content Audit Related Posts Guide to Performing Bulk Email Verification While end users are eager to try out Google Buzz for themselves, many of the Web’s largest social properties have expressed a certain amount of fear, uncertainty and doubt about the search giant’s move into the social space.A Facebook rep said that the company is interested to see how Google’s latest product will make the Web more social and more open, but the Facebook team has their concerns about whether Buzz’s friendship model is really all that functional. After a little bit of messing around with the new product today, we can understand their point of view.ReadWriteWeb’s full coverage and analysis of Google Buzz:Live Blog From AnnouncementAnalysis: Open Data StandardsAnalysis: Geo-Social NetworkFacebook & Google BuzzComparison to FriendFeedEnterprise ApplicationsBuzz Hacks & TipsThe Missing FeaturesGoogle Makes Changes to Buzzcenter_img Facebook is Becoming Less Personal and More Pro… “We’re supportive of technologies that help make the web more social and the world more open,” a Facebook rep wrote to us today, “and we’re interested to see how Google Buzz progresses over time.”However, the Facebooker had words of warning about Buzz’s hazy friendship model. To offer a brief explanation, Google has taken users’ Gmail inboxes and Google Talk IM contacts and programmatically tried to determine with whom users communicate most frequently. Users can share Buzz posts with the world (and Google search), or they can share privately through their existing Gmail groups or custom-made groups in Buzz. For more detail, take a look at this demo video: Tags:#Facebook#Google#web Google Buzz seems to involve an asymmetric follower/friend model, but we’re not completely sure how friendships and shared posts will work. As our Facebooker wrote, “The continued growth of the social web will be determined by people and personal relationships. The people that you email and chat with the most may not be your closest friends or the people that you want to share and connect with.“We can definitely understand this point of view. Some folks rarely use Gmail to communicate with their closest friends and family members because they see them in person or use other networks to get in touch. On the flip side of that coin, as more of us are using Gmail for work communication, it might be irrelevant or overly personal to follow and share with professional contacts. All in all, one of our biggest concerns about Buzz adoption (being able to play nicely with existing social apps) carries over into this part of the conversation, as well: In addition to creating “best guesses” for who to friend and follow using Gmail & Google Talk, why doesn’t Google simply use Twitter OAuth and Facebook Connect to import existing friendships? What do you think? Will Google Buzz’s friendship model work? Or does Facebook have a point about having carefully user-approved friendships online?last_img read more

first_imgFive to go: Spurs to sell stars – including Dierby Paul Vegas17 days agoSend to a friendShare the loveEric Dier is to be transfer-listed by Tottenham in January, it has been revealed. The Times says Dier will be joined by Christian Eriksen, Danny Rose, Serge Aurier and Victor Wanyama on the list with a mid-season shake-up seemingly on the agenda. Tottenham went into the international break in miserable circumstances after conceding 10 goals in two games with the 3-0 defeat by Brighton following the 7-2 demolition by Bayern Munich in the Champions League. Dier has struggled for minutes this season following the arrival of Tanguy Ndombele and has featured just three times. England team-mate Harry Winks appears to be the preferred option alongside Ndombele and so Dier has been forced to take a peripheral role so far. With a lack of involvement the report details how Pochettino is willing to sell Dier and some of his misfiring team-mates in a bid to freshen up the ailing squad. Video Showing Woman Stealing Vegetable Steamer From Kid Is Insane But Likely Fake

first_imgA woman steals from a kid on Black Friday.viral video black friday woman steals from kidThe video you’ll see below, which was “reportedly” shot during Black Friday, seems too crazy to be real. But it’s going viral, and since you’re going to wind up seeing it anyway, we figured we’d show it to you. We realize that it has nothing to do with college sports. The clip, which supposedly was shot in Saginaw, Michigan, shows a number of shoppers violently battling for vegetable steamers. An adult woman steals one from a kid and gets pummeled by the child’s mother.Given the fact that we’re talking about vegetable steamers, this sounds like the work of Jimmy Kimmel, but it’s hard to be sure. Either way, enjoy:last_img

Reports: Florida Quarterback Will Grier Likely To Transfer

The Gators defeated the Tigers 11-9.Mandatory Credit: Scott Halleran /AllsportIn six games for the Florida Gators this season, quarterback Will Grier was extremely impressive. Grier threw for 1,204 yards, 10 touchdowns and three interceptions, and completed over 65-percent of his passes, leading UF to a 6-0 start to the season. After being suspended 12 games for performance enhancing drugs, Grier will not be eligible to play until mid-way through next year, but according to a multiple reports, it is unlikely that his next game comes as a Gator.I can confirm Scout report that QB Will Grier is transferring from #Gators. Approached coaching staff about it last week.— Matt Baker (@MBakerTBTimes) December 19, 2015 Here’s more from Scout’s Bob Redman. Team sources have informed FightinGators.com that Florida redshirt freshman quarterback Will Grier approached the coaching staff this week and asked for a transfer. …Last week, Jim McElwain said that Grier would be back with the program January 5, after being asked to stay away from team activities and allow the team to play through the season without the distraction of Grier being around and unavailable.Despite the ability to return and compete for the job again, one which he wouldn’t be allowed to play until October 15, 2016 against Missouri, sources are telling FightinGators.com that Grier will likely transfer to another program.Redman notes that there is a chance that Grier stays, but assuming this decision stays, it is a huge blow to a Florida team that became very inept offensively without Grier. If he transfers to another FBS program, he will sit the entire 2016 season, and return as a junior in 2017.[Scout]last_img read more
