For hosting, Amazon Web Services and Rackspace were the most popular services. Windows Azure was noticeably absent. But why? A topic turned up on Quora, citing our post and wondering why the lack of adoption. The topic has sparked a bit of discussion. The consensus: Azure is better suited for larger enterprise operations. That does make sense to some degree. We’ll just have to see by how much. The people who make up Azure are a smart group. Under Bob Muglia, a real push started to attract more developers. That became apparent at the Professional Developers Conference, which was not a huge event but did have a core group there developing on numerous platforms such as Windows 7, Windows Phone 7 and the Azure marketplaces. Muglia is leaving Microsoft so questions are out there but the structure is in place for his successor.Further, the tablet market will continue to drive a startup community to Azure. And BizSpark is no wilting effort. The official Microsoft blog states some of the results for the program since the effort began in 2008:Since then, about 35,000 startups from all over the world have enrolled in the program, which provides early-stage businesses with fast and easy access to software development tools and platforms as well as a network of 2,500 network partners – including venture capital firms, university incubators, consultants and angel investors – interested in helping startups grow.Microsoft will also focus on synchronizing connected devices this year, which will be a driving feature as devices are optimized for users. That alone will help drive development. Our bet is that synchronization will be a driving factor in the sale of Windows Phone 7 and tablet devices.Commenters on Quora have a different perspective. They state that Azure is just not the right choice for startups, citing better suitability for large enterprises, the costs and productivity differences between it and platforms such as Heroku, which actually runs on Amazon Web Services. What Commenters Say About Why Azure is Better for the Fortune 500Startups are disruptive. Microsoft caters to Fortune 500 companies. Using Azure means startups adopting one vendor as opposed to an open source community with large pools of available software engineers. The costs are higher compared to platforms such as Heroku. It can cost at least $40 per month for each site a user sets up. To set up an app on Heroku is free. It can take longer. One developer commented that for typical Web apps they are ten times more productive with Ruby on Rails than the Microsoft. Rails was built for the Web. Microsoft originally built its stack for the desktop.Azure is a platform, which is a same reason that Google App Engine is not represented either. Amazon and Rackpace are infrastructure providers, which provide the flexibility to build your own stack, which gives far more flexibility than a platform, which at some point will pose limits to the developer. On a final note, there are some praises for Windows Azure. Martin Wawrusch critiqued Azure but ended by saying that it is a great platform and he wholeheartedly recommends it. He even said that the SQL Azure engine is years ahead of the competition, serving as a good fit for backend processing for a startup. He does also say he would however not use it for any front end work in a startup environment. There are still open questions about Azure. It’s not ruled out as a platform. It has potential for considerable success. The question is its comparison to other offerings on Amazon or Rakspace. For now, those offerings are more popular and should continue to be so for at least the year ahead. The track and field competitions get underway on Friday and this is one of the largest ever Indian contingents that we have seen in athletics at the Olympics.Expecting a medal in track and field would be asking too much as the leading athletes from other nations are far ahead of us in terms of training and level of competition. Indian athletics still has a long way to go before we can actually compete and challenge the top international stars. On Friday, we will have four Indian athletes competing at the Olympics and all the efforts they have put in over the last couple of years will finally be tested.Om Prakash Karhana (shot put), Krishna Poonia and Seema Antil (discus throw) and Mayookha Johny (triple jump) will be seen in action; the discus throwers have the best possible chance of making it to the finals.Amongst the four, Mayookha’s chances are pretty remote as not much has been heard about how she has fared in recent competitions as her focus was more on attaining the qualifying mark in the long jump event.Om Prakash will have to match his personal best to make the cut for the final. He hasn’t participated in enough competitions in his build-up towards the Olympics; moreover, the events in which he competed lacked top level athletes. However, Om Prakash has tremendous potential and we hope for the best.Krishna and Seema should qualify for the finals if they manage to cross the 61m mark, which they have achieved on numerous occasions.advertisementJust like every other sport, technique is quite crucial in athletics as well. That is exactly why I feel the discus throwers are more prepared. Their best efforts have come this year and what goes in favour of Seema is that she seems to have peaked just at the right time.Krishna had her personal best throw of 64.76m in May this year and although she looks prepared, I feel she might have peaked a couple of weeks early. Both Krishna and her husband Virendar Poonia, who is also her coach, are targetting the 65m mark and if they manage that, India could be celebrating its first Olympic medal in athletics. After the bronze medal from Gagan Narang, nothing much has gone India’s way, although Saina Nehwal is on track to win a medal. Indian athletes have been training for long to prepare themselves in the best possible manner for the ultimate challenge. But making tall claims wouldn’t help our athletes and it would be better for them to focus on making the finals, and then put everything on the line.(The writer is an Asian Games gold medallist and finalist at 1964 Tokyo Olympics)
About the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your say Liverpool boss Klopp tells Oxlade-Chamberlain: You can do moreby Paul Vegasa day agoSend to a friendShare the loveLiverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has reminded Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain he could do even more, despite complementing the England international on his goal against Genk on Wednesday. The 25-year-old scored his second of the game with a sumptuous first-time strike with the outside of his foot from the edge of the box.”It was a pretty stiff first half,” Klopp said. “Then we could show the boys a couple of spaces which they could and should use in the second half. Then we scored the second goal – by the way, the first goal was very brilliant and the second goal even nicer, and all our goals were unbelievably beautiful.”It was absolutely a great moment for him, but I would say with Ox his performance was exactly the same as the performance of the team – the goals were great but all the rest could have been better.”
viral video black friday woman steals from kidThe video you’ll see below, which was “reportedly” shot during Black Friday, seems too crazy to be real. But it’s going viral, and since you’re going to wind up seeing it anyway, we figured we’d show it to you. We realize that it has nothing to do with college sports. The clip, which supposedly was shot in Saginaw, Michigan, shows a number of shoppers violently battling for vegetable steamers. An adult woman steals one from a kid and gets pummeled by the child’s mother.Given the fact that we’re talking about vegetable steamers, this sounds like the work of Jimmy Kimmel, but it’s hard to be sure. Either way, enjoy:

How NFL overtime games since 2012 would have played out under different OT rules New rule results are based on the score 10 minutes into overtime.Source: Pro-Football-Reference.com Sudden death (1974-2011)15:00✓6:472.4 Old rule (2012-16)15:007:286.0% RESULTS New rule (2017- )10:006:3919.3 The NFL owners on Tuesday approved a drastic change to the NFL’s regular-season overtime format: cutting its maximum length from 15 minutes to 10.With games played as frequently as four days a week, the NFL says it’s trying to avoid the dangerous combination of long games and short recovery periods. The move may also be a reaction to last season, when six games went more than 12 minutes into overtime. Those included the Week 7 “Sunday Night Football” stinker, during which two teams spent five full periods slogging toward a 6-6 tie.But like the 2012 overtime modification, in which the sudden death format was changed so that a team couldn’t win the game with a first-possession field goal, Tuesday’s rule could be at the expense of overtime’s main purpose: deciding a winner. Since 2012, according to Pro-Football-Reference.com, 83 regular-season games have gone into overtime, with five resulting in ties. Of those 83, 21 games lasted more than 10 minutes, with 16 tied at the 10-minute mark. Under the new rules, those 16 games would have all resulted in a draw. (With the change, two of the actual ties would have ended up with a winner, and three would have remained ties.)In addition to potentially tripling the rate of ties, the 10-minute overtime wouldn’t necessarily save that much time either. The 83 overtimes since 2012 would have been 49 game-seconds shorter on average. OT RULESTIME ON CLOCKFIRST POSSESSION FG WINS?AVG OT LENGTHTIE RATE The amount of time left on the clock affects play-calling and decision-making. Some analysts, like the MMQB’s Peter King, argued that if overtime were cut to 10 minutes, coaches would call games “faster,” pushing to get a win while the clock winds down. Maybe — but since 2012, 70 of 83 overtime games had at least two possessions, and the average elapsed time at the end of the second possession was 5:57. That means the average third possession would start just 4:03 away from a split decision. Will the NFL’s generally risk adverse coaches really jeopardize losing a bird (or, in this case, half a bird) in hand by diving into the bush to chase a full victory? The new system already has one detractor: Saints quarterback Drew Brees. He won the 2009 NFC championship game by completing just two short overtime passes to set up the field goal that gave New Orleans a sudden-death win — and a trip to Super Bowl XLIV.“I would disagree with [the rule change] because more games are going to end in ties now,” Brees told “The Dan Patrick Show.” He added that he wouldn’t be opposed to the NFL’s adopting rules that were similar to the “exciting” college format. In NCAA D-I football, each team’s offense lines up on the other team’s 25-yard line and takes turns trying to outscore each other, possession for possession. Although this scales back special teams and puts the bulk of emphasis on red-zone play, the baseball-like system of alternating possessions feels fairer to some fans. The NFL game may be best served by rolling back the 2012 modification in which the league changed regular-season overtime from sudden death to occasionally prolonged death. That change targeted the perception that games were too often being decided by coin flips: All the receiving team in OT had to do was make a few first downs and kick a field goal, as Brees’s Saints did in 2009.Under the 2012 rules,1This change was made for playoff games earlier, in 2010. teams were given a chance to respond if they held the receiving team to a field goal on its first possession. Given the chance, though, few teams have responded to period-opening field goals with a score of their own. In five seasons, according to Pro-Football-Reference, there have been only seven occasions when a team kicked a field-goal on its opening drive that was directly answered by their opponent scoring. As the table shows, the old sudden death rules, in which a tie occurred only if no one scored during the 15-minute overtime period, would have reduced average overtime duration nearly as much as the 10-minute cap, but with far fewer ties.Of course, if player safety is truly its highest priority, the NFL would do away with regular-season overtime altogether. Assuming that King is right about how coaches will react to a shorter overtime, removing it would force them to be more aggressive in regulation. If he’s wrong, at least we wouldn’t have to sit through 10 minutes of timid, tired football to get the same unsatisfying result.CORRECTION (May 24, 10 a.m.): An earlier version of the table in this article incorrectly said the NFL’s sudden-death overtime period from 1974 to 2011 was 10 minutes long. It was a 15-minute overtime.

Andy Rollings has echoed Glenn Murray’s praise of Florin Andone, after the veteran striker called Andone a ‘nuisance’ due to his work rate for Brighton & Hove Albion. The former Seagulls defender played during the club’s first golden era in the 1970s and now watches closely as part of his role as a match-day host at the Amex Stadium.“Glenn has been incredible for us. He will always score goals.” Rollings said, according to Argus.“I think Andone looks a clever player.
