Everyone believed we can do it: Mohammad Hafeez after Pakistan stun England

first_imgPakistan veteran Mohammad Hafeez produced an all-round effort with bat and ball to script a 14-run win for his team against England in Nottingham as the Men in Green bounced back in style in the World Cup 2019.Hafeez was his side’s top scorer with 84 off 62 balls, while Babar Azam made 63 and captain Sarfaraz Ahmed belted a quickfire 55 as Pakistan posted 348 for 8 after being put into bat. Hafeez then chipped in with the crucial wicket of England captain Eoin Morgan as Pakistan stopped England at 334 for 9 in 50 overs.Speaking after the game, Hafeez said the team never stopped believing in themselves during the second innings when Joe Root and Jos Buttler were going great guns during their 130-run partnership for the fifth wicket.Root (107) and Buttler (103) both scored hundreds but once they fell, the English batting collapsed with Wahab Riaz finishing with 3 wickets while Mohammad Amir and Shadab Khan picked up two apiece.”Everyone believed we can do this. We’re really happy and everyone chipped in, taking the task and giving everything. To be honest, we were very confident and we had a good meeting together. We just needed one winning performance. It was a total team effort,” Hafeez said after being adjudged man-of-the-match.The win also snapped Pakistan’s 11-match losing streak which also included the 4-0 loss against England in the ODI series just prior to the World Cup.Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed also heaped praise on his team and called it a total team effort.”I think it’s a great team effort. Fakhar and Imam started well. The match starts at 10.30pm and the first ten overs is important. They got a good start and that’s why we got 350. We tried a few different things – we started with Shadab because they weren’t good against spinners. Fielding is an important part and it was the main difference. This gives a lot of confidence to the team,” Sarfaraz Ahmed said.advertisementAlso Read | England vs Pakistan Highlights, ICC World Cup 2019Also Read | World Cup 2019: Pakistan keep calm to upset England in high-scoring thrillerAlso Read | Jos Buttler hits England’s fastest World Cup 100Also Read | England vs Pakistan: Joe Root 1st player to hit 100 in World Cup 2019last_img read more
