Old debt lands driver in court for attempted murder

first_imgA taxi driver who allegedly stabbed a man who owed him $2000 was hauled before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on Tuesday.Morris Carter, of Lot 20 Durban Street, Wortmanville, Georgetown, appeared before Magistrate Clive Nurse.Morris CarterThe charge detailed that on August 27, 2019 at Sandy Babb Street, Kitty, Georgetown, he wounded Matthew Gilbert, with intent to commit murder.Carter was represented by Attorney-at-Law Adrian Thompson, who in a bail application, informed the court that the incident occurred at a wash bay, where his client was washing his car. He claimed that his client confronted the Virtual Complainant (VC) about the money owed; however, they got into a heated argument and a fight occurred.Attorney Thompson informed the court that his client received injuries from the VC during the fight; however, Gilbert was never charged.Police Prosecutor Christopher Morris, in presenting the prosecution’s case, stated that on August 27, 2019, Gilbert was at a wash bay when he was approached by the defendant, who asked for the $2000 owed to him for a ring, which had initially cost $7000.The Prosecutor said that Gilbert then claimed he did not have any money, but promised to pay the debt later in the month. According to the prosecution, the defendant became annoyed, pulled out a pair of scissors, and stabbed the VC several times about his body.The VC was then picked up and rushed to the Kitty Health Centre, but owing to the severity of his injuries, he was transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital.The Prosecutor objected to bail, informing the court that the VC is still hospitalised.The Magistrate, after listening to the facts, remanded the 43-year-old man to prison. The case will continue on September 26, 2019.last_img
