Lecture scheduled to discuss diabetes WHITTIER – A lecture on diabetes and a free glucose screening will be held from 2to 4 p.m. June 15 at Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital’s Flo and Frank L. Scott Conference Center, 12401 Washington Blvd. “Diabetes 101: Lecture and Screening” will help listeners discern whether they are at risk for diabetes and will discuss diet, exercise, medications available and prevention. Volunteers needed for park concerts PICO RIVERA – The city is seeking volunteers to assist with its annual Concerts in the Park series, beginning Sunday. Duties include set-up, operation of the Art in the Park booth and break down/ cleanup following concerts. Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age. Applications are available at all city park facilities. The free Sunday evening concerts will be held from 5to 7 p.m. through Aug. 6 at Smith Park, 6016 Rosemead Blvd. For more information, call (562) 801-4430. Relay raises funds to fight cancer WHITTIER – The Whittier Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society invite the public to the opening ceremonies of “Walk Around the Clock,” a 24-hour relay to raise money for cancer research and treatment, starting at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Whittier College track. Survivors are invited to participate in the survivors lap, which starts the relay. Luminarias may also be purchased to celebrate survivors and to honor loved ones lost to cancer. They will line the track during a special ceremony at 9 p.m. Saturday evening. Closing ceremonies are set for 9 a.m. Sunday. For more information, call (562) 464-3360. Council revises expense policy PICO RIVERA – The City Council has adopted a new expense reimbursement policy for council members, members of boards and commissions and city employees.
